Help get books in the hands of prisoners. On Wednesday, December 4, 2024, from 5 pm - 6:30 pm, in Room 141 of the Reese Library (directions) of Augusta University on the Summerville Campus, people are gathering to fill out holiday cards and prepare them to mail to Books Behind Bars New Jersey. Here's part of the that organization's announcement:
The holiday season can be especially hard for our incarcerated friends. Sending cards is a way to share joy, hope and connection. It also shows prison staff that these folks have community on the outside that is watching and looking out for them. With each card, we will enclose information on how they can request free books from our program.
Bring holiday cards, with the envelopes in which they can be mailed, and first class postage stamps. Important: avoid the ones with loose glitter. Matte is best. If you don't have cards or stamps, don't worry! Come anyway.
And, if you are part of the Augusta University community, register via JagPulse at https://givepul.se/69nbov.
And if you can't make it that day, you can still participate. This page explains everything, and you can fill out the cards and then mail them yourself.
Alternatively, you can deliver your contributions to either the Circulation Desk of the Reese Library or The Book Tavern at 978 Broad St in Augusta until close of business December 4. You can donate cards (with their envelopes) or postage or checks made payable to Books Behind Bars NJ sealed in an envelope with "Donation" written on it and leave it at the participating locations.
